REVIEW OF THE HOSTE ARMS& BURNHAM MARKETBurnham Market also known as Chelsea next the sea I don’t know what Burnham Market has got but it has got it in abundance! I note that Burnham Market has sometimes been referred to as “Chelsea Next the Sea” This sums up the situation rather well. Except Burnham Market is better than Chelsea if you believe in the old adage: “less is more.” How is less more? I’ll tell you, Burnham Market does not have any Multiples or National Outlets, it has individual shops run, (by in large,) the owners of the said shops. No Tesco, Laura Ashley or M&S to be found on The Green in BM. There is the odd retailer that has another/other shops elsewhere, but it is rarely that you don’t find yourself buying from the owner himself or herself. No FMCG (Fast moving Consumer Goods) here. Yes less is much more! I adore the atmosphere that Burnham Market has to offer; I am reliably informed that it is the “VIBE” that I love so much. If vibe is the correct word for my feeling so be it! This old foogie adores the vibe that Burnham Market has to offer. The vibe is nowhere better felt than in The Hoste Arms especially when Emma is working. Emma tours her territory with her ever-watchful eyes; she keeps everything ticking over at a very agreeable pace. You will know when Emma is near, as you will first hear the click of her stiletto on the wood or stone floors of the Hoste, this is not a daunting sound on the contrary it is a reassuring and comforting sound. I like The Hoste Arms very much, you always feel welcomed, whether you be in the bar, lounge, one of the restaurants, staying in one of their beautiful rooms or just visiting the gallery. At the Hoste the food and service is sublime on a regular basis. The menu has been put together not with thoughts of: “Easy on the chefs but with imagination and great taste for the diner.” This is a policy rarely found, and to be admired, as it is by the volume of returning happy and contented customers, me included. A SPECIAL NOTE I enjoy my wine and have seriously studied Vinification and Viticulture and let me recommend this wine to you as served at The Hoste. This is not a pompous wine it just has a wonderful taste. Burgundy No. 626 Aloxe Les Valozieres Roux Pere & Fils Lingering and very pleasant on the palate Succulent fruity An absolute classic from the Cotes de Beaune. More... We arrived in Burnham Market last Friday evening. Valerie and me… oh! Yes and “Thornton” (Chocolate Labrador). We wanted to see the progress on the garden room, which was replacing an old shed; Planning permission was required as Ivy Cottage is a grade 2 listed building. Nigel our builder was doing a marvellous job, the joinery and stone masonry I can report were of a very hight standard. We were really pleased with the look and progress of this small garden room: Under floor heating, Rattan furniture, The Tree of Life wall hanging, a docking station and speakers for your Ipod. Pot purri. Essence burner etc…“A place for a good book and a glass of something white or red and escape the rigors of life or an hour or two”.We awoke early Saturday morning and took “Thornty” for her customary run on Holkien Beach. Our favourite beach and Thornton’s! We again looked at the Garden Room on our return to Ivy Cottage, we were even happier as now the winter sun had come out and the sky was a beautiful blue. We decided on a celebratory lunch. It had to be The Hoste and we would eat in the lounge where dogs were allowed, so that Thornty could come too. So we strolled across the road. Emma directed us to a nice seat and good nosing position. I did not need to look at the menu I had in my mind that wonderful French combo of Moules Pomme Frits with a bowl of Mayonnaise. Valerie had seafood Linguine. We washed it all down with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Absolutely Fab (as per). We spent Saturday afternoon curled up of the leather sofa at Ivy looking at a roaring log fire. Also Fab. Thank you Emma for yet another fantastic meal & memory at The Hoste.
